Camp Upper Darling, Near Menindie
16th Octb 1860

Sir,

Upon mature consideration, I have arrived at the conclusion that my only course under recent and present circumstances is to tender the resignation of the appointment I now hold under you as second of the expedition under your orders.

I beg, therefore, to adopt that course upon the understanding that sufficient time be allowed me to permit my reaching Melbourne, the spot from whence I commenced my present duties (say a fortnight) as I shall have to travel slowly until I reach Swan Hill where I hope to find the mail coach. I hope you will not deem me too exacting in requesting a certificate that I have performed my duties well up to this date.

G Landells
