Wills used Roman numerals when numbering their nightly campsites as it was easier to carve or chisel Roman numerals into trees when making blazes. The campsites started at Camp One at Essendon, although there is no evidence to show the expedition started marking trees until Balranald. Consequently the first marked campsite, Camp 30 would have been marked as:

B
XXX

The most northerly marked campsite was Camp 119, near Normanton. This was Camp 119 which was marked with a circle of 15 trees blazed with a B and one tree blazed:

B
CXIX

Below is a calculator which will convert Arabic numerals to Roman figures and vice versa.
